Darkness into Light 2026
We gather this morning at V36 to help stop suicide. As darkness gives way to light; as yesterday becomes history, and a new day emerges full of potential; a day of hope is born.
When suicide happens it is rarely due to a single factor, but a combination of social, cultural, biological, psychological, and environmental factors present in the life of the individual. There is nothing to be ashamed of in asking for help. It is not weak.
We are here to support those struggling with suicidal thoughts and to support those that have lost loved ones and friends to suicide. Each number written on a report or a statistic is an individual, a loved one, a family member, a friend or a work colleague.
Listening Ear is a local charity which supports and assists the community with Mental health, suicide prevention, drug & alcohol awareness, debt & welfare and housing. A confidential holistic nonjudgmental wrap around service provided at community level. Listening Ear provides free 24/7 emergency telephone helpline, "daily" calls, one to one sessions, walk in emergency sessions and professional mental health counselling. If you need a non-judgemental empathetic listening ear we are here for you because you matter to us.
Thank you to each and every one of you; your actions today are helping to save lives.
We are joined this morning by the Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council Councillor Julie Gilmore and I would invite Julie to address us before we begin our walk.
